The Land Trust for Tennessee is in its final push to secure matching funds that will forever perserve the final meeting place of the Cherokee Council before thousands departed on the Trail of Tears. Of a project total of $1.2 million, we need only $30,000 additional dollars to protect the sacred Cherokee site known as Rattlesnake Springs forever - but time is of the essence! Now is your chance to make a contribution that will be matched 3 to 1 by program dollars and generous individual and foundation gifts.
Your gift will preserve an iconic piece of Tennessee's history
Listed on the National Register of Historical Places and the National Park Service's Trail of Tears National Historic Trail website, this 667 working dairy farm in Bradley County ranked highest in conservation value in Tennessee for the USDA's Farm and Ranchland Protection Program. In addition to its nationally significant history, the agricultural heritage of this property dates back to 1850 in the Moore family, qualifying for the Tennessee Century Farms program as a 150 year family farm. The gently rolling hills contain over 200 acres of soils rated prime for agriculture and the Rattlesnake Branch and Chatata Creek empty just beyond the farm into the Hiwassee State Scenic River.
Only $30,000 needed to make this happen by September 2nd - every donation counts!
The Chatata Valley area of Bradley County is experiencing growth pressure, as a new airport and emerging industrial development begin to take root. The historic context of the powerful Trail of Tears story is at risk of being lost - please stand with The Land Trust for Tennessee and the Moore family as we work together to preserve what cannot be replaced. Please help us realize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save an iconic landscape and commemorate the Cherokee legacy that lives on along the Hiwassee River.
