The conservation of the significant historical, agricultural and natural resources of the Snow Creek, Leipers Creek and lower Lick Creek valleys is of concern to the farmers and residents who make this largely unspoiled area their home. These stakeholders recognize the scenic values and resources that make up this outstanding landscape, and many have ties to the area dating back for generations.
Residents of the project area know that though they have so far "dodged the bullet" of nearly uncontrolled development that has affected neighboring areas over the last twenty years, increased development in the area is inevitable. A number of landowners came together in 2005 and invited the Land Trust for Tennessee to help them assess the resources of the area and to offer suggestions for guiding appropriate development while protecting the agricultural, historic, scenic and natural features of this incomparable region.
This study seeks to identify the key resources of the Duck River Highlands region and address rural and open space conservation issues. It has three basic objectives:
1) To identify the significant natural and man-made resources in the project area
2) To outline options for preserving agricultural, cultural and natural resources
3) To help establish a framework by which local stakeholders can address development and conservation concerns
