| Special Lands on Duck and Piney Rivers Protected Forever
555-acre farm permanently protected by Land Trust for Tennessee
The wooded, hilly farm bisected by the Piney and Duck Rivers was just what Jeanie and Bill Cammack had hoped to find. Since first seeing the place on a hot, midsummer day in 1969, they have been challenged and rewarded by their love for this beautiful space. Cattle and hay fields dominate the landscape, but mature trees on wooded, rocky hills and the ever-changing river corridors make this a most remarkable land conservation opportunity.
The Piney and Duck Rivers are important watersheds in Hickman County and adjacent counties. A recent report from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation noted vital aquatic species living in the Duck River. The Land Trust collaborates with other conservation partners like the Natural Resources Conservation Service and The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency in an ongoing effort to help landowners conserve special parts of the river corridors on the Piney and the Duck. A number of other conservation easements secured by The Land Trust in the Duck River have been instrumental in protecting water quality and recreational resources.
The Cammacks sought out The Land Trust for Tennessee to be sure their farm would remain in its rural state long after they are gone. The Land Trust guarantees to protect the land while they own it and insures it will remain a farm when their family may no longer be involved. They are satisfied knowing future owners and the community will enjoy this farmland as well as the unique river junction.
"It is the special combination of features on this farm that make it so important to protect," notes Byron Trauger, chairman of The Land Trust for Tennessee. "These rivers are vital to our communities and our natural environment. The Cammacks are wonderful stewards of this landscape. We are honored to be partners with them in permanently conserving their farm."
