The Metropolitan Historical Commission celebrated National Preservation Month by awarding fifteen properties with its coveted Preservation Award and recognizing seven properties with honorable mentions. The event took place in the Nashville Public Library Conference Center. Forty-five properties were nominated this year in the categories of industrial/engineering, educational/institutional, religious, commercial, residential, and infill architecture. Judges for the 2010 Preservation Awards were Holly Barnett, Historic Preservation Specialist in the Environmental Division with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, and Historic Nashville, Inc. board member; Ann Eaden, Vice President of Beaman Automotive Group and longtime member of the Metropolitan Historical Commission and Historic Zoning Commission; and Ann Toplovich, Executive Director of the Tennessee Historical Society.
The Metropolitan Historical Commission presented the Achievement Award to Robert D. “Bob” Tuke for his leadership and dedication to the preservation of Nashville’s historic places, including the once-endangered Union Station. The Commission honored the Land Trust for Tennessee with the Commissioners’ Award for its dedication to the preservation of Davidson County’s natural and historic landscapes, farmland and historic homes. The Commission presented a special award for Leadership in History to State Historian Walter T. Durham for his commitment to bringing Tennessee and Davidson County history to the public.
