Cornelia Fort
Nashville native Cornelia Fort was an aviator in the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) and was the first female pilot in American history to die on active duty. While working as a civilian pilot, she was one of the first witnesses to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She was later recruited to serve in the newly established Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron and she became the first WAFS fatality on March 21, 1943. Fort's achievements as a military pilot are commemorated by a 135 acre airpark named after her that was built in 1945 near her Cumberland River area family farm adjacent to present day Nashville’s Shelby Park and bottoms.
