ONE MILE OF FRONTAGE ON THE CANEY FORK FOREVER PROTECTED
Pat Brumfield, Howard Harlan, and The Land Trust have protected 1
mile of frontage on the Caney Fork River. In 2010, Pat and Howard donated a
conservation easement on over 200 acres along the Caney Fork River and I-40
near Buffalo Valley in Smith County. This property has it all—high ridge tops
that are visible from I-40, agricultural lands along the Caney Fork River,
mature native hardwood forests, and an area known as the Caney Fork Bluffs.
This specific area was identified by the TN Division of Natural Heritage for
its unique habitat and as being home to a variety of rare or endangered
species. Within a 2 mile radius of the property, the State of TN has
identified rare or endangered species such as Harper's Umbrella-plant, Water
Stitchwort, Western Wallflower, Limestone Blue Star, Branching Whitlow-grass,
Sooty Darter, Price's Potato-bean, Spectaclecase, and Svenson's Wild-rye.
The next time you are driving I-40 east towards Knoxville, look to
your right and your left as you pass over the 3rd and 4th
bridges of the Caney Fork River (just before the rest area) and you are looking
at one of the most beautiful landscape in the state and one that will now
always be protected. Thank you Pat and Howard for your amazing gift to
Tennessee and its visitors!
